What is the main difference between digital signage wayfinding and directories? Many people often get confused between the two. However, there is a narrow line that separates them. Today we want to address the biggest differences between the two solutions.

Based on the University of Michigan, wayfinding “is knowing where you are in a building, or an environment, knowing where your desired location is, and knowing how to get there from your present location.”A wayfinding platform pulls this information together and graphically shows how to get from point a to point z, seamlessly.

On the flip side, directories are platforms that provide a list of places within a certain building / business with their corresponding location numbers and names. This generally is more of a static digital image without the ability to educate the consumer on getting from point A to point z. Even though both devices can display advertisements, weather updates, maps and other valuable information for your customers, there is a significant key difference between the two.

Let’s look at an example:

Imagine you are at a new airport for the first time. Everything looks so unfamiliar and everybody is walking in a hurry to their destination. How will you find your way? To make it more fun, let’s say your destination is far away.

In this case, a wayfinding solution is your best option.  It will take you where you want to go and provide information regarding all the stores and restaurants along the way. It can show you videos of these sites, while listing specials and sales. The difference is that a wayfinding unit provide a service that is memorable, educational and stress-free.

Some similarities:

Both wayfindering and directories can:

  • Be interactive
  • Display maps and locations
  • Advertise
  • Nurture leads
  • Be sources of revenue
  • Enhance customer experience
  • Be fountains of information

So, if you owned a business what platform would work best for you? What experiences are you trying to give to your customers and how complicated is your business layout. Define these questions and you will have your answer as to what platform would best benefit your business.
